What Is an Open-Top Container?

Introduction to Open Top Containers

Open Top Container, abbreviated as OT container, is a type of ISO standard container. Compared to conventional standard containers, an open top container has a standard end door structure but lacks a fixed rigid top structure. Due to its structural characteristics, this type of container allows for cargo loading and unloading both through the end door and from the top using a crane or other lifting equipment. This design is particularly suitable for transporting large machinery, or oversized and over-height cargo.

What Is an Open-Top Container?

Dimensions and Protection of Open Top Containers

Open top containers vary in size based on their length and height, including 20-foot open top containers (20'OT), 40-foot open top containers (40'OT), and 40-foot high-cube open top containers (40'HC-OT). Although the top of an open top container can be opened, it does not mean that the cargo can be completely exposed. Through the use of removable top cross beams (top bows or top support beams) and waterproof tarpaulins, the top structure strength and rigidity, as well as waterproof protection requirements, match those of standard containers. When the cargo height exceeds the container body, waterproof tarpaulins can be customized according to the nature of the cargo for waterproof protection. The cargo must be properly secured, and the installation of top beams ensures rigid connection of the container. Usually, customs compliant waterproof tarpaulins and sealing ropes can be used to reliably connect the tarpaulin with the container. Compared to standard containers, open top containers offer stronger loading capability and, besides being suitable for large items, fully meet the transportation requirements for general cargo.

Misconceptions about Open Top Containers and Flat Rack Containers

Many people mistakenly believe that because open top containers lack a top, the cargo can be loaded very high; others think that because flat rack containers have no sides, the cargo can be loaded very wide. In reality, both open top and flat rack container transport adhere to strict standards. The absence of a top makes open top containers less stable than ordinary containers, which imposes a height limit usually below 4 meters. Similarly, flat rack containers are restricted by their structure and terminal lifting equipment limits, with the maximum load capacity for a 20-foot flat rack container being 31 tons, and 40 tons for a 40-foot flat rack container, with width and height usually limited to within 4 meters. Of course, in some cases, the loading dimensions of flat rack containers can have some flexibility.
